Henry Martin Gasser: (1909 - 1981)
Born: Newark, New Jersey
Studied: Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art, Grand Central School of Art and the Art Students League of New York with Robert Brackman. Gasser also studied privately under John R. Grabach.
Member: National Academy of Design, American Watercolor Society,
Royal Society of Art(Great Britain), New Jersey and California Watercolor Society, Salmagundi, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington Watercolor Clubs and the Connecticut Art Academy.
Gasser is represented in over sixty museums and college collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Newark Museum, just to name a few.
Gasser has won more than one hundred exhibition prizes nationally, including the prestigious Hallgarten Prize awarded by the National Academy of Design. The Zabriskie, Osborne and Obrig prizes at the American Watercolor Society and countless others.
In addition to Gasser’s prolific art career, he dedicated much of his life to teaching and writing. Gasser authored seven instrucÂtional books on painting methods and techniques. Within his books are most of his paintings where he describes and demonstrates his creations. Gasser taught classes at the Art Students League in New York in addition, he served as director of the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art from 1946-54.
A Master at watercolor and oil his work consisted of, in his own words, "everyday subjects that are available to most of us; street scenes, back yards, trees, old houses, etc I looked for them in front of houses, in backyards, public parks, and elsewhere".
